What is ruptured ovarian cyst and how it is treated?

 

 

Fluid-filled sacs which develop in the ovaries are called ovarian cysts. These cysts are generally harmless but they become problematic when they get ruptured as they bleed and can cause acute pain. Ruptured ovarian cyst is removed through surgery. Ruptured Ovarian cyst is a common occurrence in menstruating women. Let us have a quick look as what exactly is rupture of ovarian cysts and how it is treated.

 

A fluid-filled sac develops in your ovary when egg fails to release at the time of ovulation owing to which follicle grows bigger as it gets filled up with fluid resulting in pain in the lower pelvic region. Over the time, cysts gets enlarged to the extent that fluid oozes out of it and the cyst is then said to be ruptured and when this happen the fluid that had leaked causes pain in pelvic region. Follicular cyst is a simple cyst that can be formed when there is no ovulation or when the fully grown follicular sac ruptures itself. The follicular cyst grows up to 2.3 inches and it is formed when ovulation occurs. When this cyst ruptures, it causes pain on the ovary where cyst is formed. One experiences this pain during ovulation process. This is a simple cyst and therefore has no symptoms and it also disappears after sometime.

 

There is another type of cyst called Corpus luteum cyst. This is a function cyst and it occurs after the egg has been released from the follicle and then it is known as corpus luteum. When there is no pregnancy then this cyst disappears but sometimes it gets filled up with fluid or even blood this cyst remains there on the ovary and it has no specific symptoms as such. Majority of the ovarian cysts are benign and can cause no risk but in the case the cyst gets ruptured, twisted or bleed then one needs medical advice as this ruptured cyst can be treated with antibiotics or one can go for surgery to remove the cyst.

 

For a short relief from the pain that ruptured ovarian follicle cause, one can take Gentamycin or a drug with similar composition. However, it is not meant for long-term relief. People also take penicillin and its variants to treat it. Metronidazole is also used for its treatment it is an effective drug. Then there is cephalosporin drug like cefotetan which aims at killing any bacteria that develop in the cyst.

 

You are also advised to have your regular checkups when you have stable condition. You can go for laparoscopic examination of your abdomen in order to detect any ruptured cyst there. If any of the cyst gets detected there then you would instructed about what to do and how to take care of yourself after you are the through with the surgical process of removing  your ruptured ovarian cyst.
